How to make your travels memorable

Memories are what you make them and no matter how you record them, there’s only way your memories will last forever.
My best tip to make travels memorable is to make the most of them: get out there, away from the tourist spots and see what the real country’s like. Take in some real local culture rather than the one offered by the hotel or holiday company. Anyone can sit in a room and watch pre-planned entertainment, but the real memories are those which show the locals doing what they do without all the hype around it.
Every country also has some excellent natural scenery and other sites which are unique to that area. So whether it’s the animals or the amazing sunset, the mountains or the lakes, or even the city sights, these are the things that make a holiday special and memorable.
I think it’s also nice to do something distinctive, whether it’s a meal or an excursion. These are the trips to that special place which you’re unlikely to do again. So my wife and I have been to Canada and seen Niagara Falls, we’ve been to Kuala Lumpur and had a meal in the Petronas Tower and been to Borneo and seen the orang-utans. These things made a trip around the world just that bit extra special.
There are different ways to record these memories, whether using the latest technology or the more traditional methods. You might decide to use a camcorder or digital camera, which you can look at again and again or download to your computer. Or you might opt for keeping a diary of events; maybe emailing friends and family back home if you can find a PC.
But I think by far the best way to make travels memorable is to soak up as much of the experience as you can. My wife and I often think of different holidays we’ve been on and can sit for ages talking about the sunset, or a certain city the sort of memories that nothing but our own heads can record. And it’s not just these memories which we talk about there’s also the things like taking a boat along the river in Bangkok and being refreshed by the lack of health and safety precautions, or laughing at the way our surname is pronounced in different parts of the world. Some things just can’t be documented easily.
So other things might help us recall certain things but our memory can last forever, even after photos have faded, the PC has crashed and your DVD has been scratched. Let’s face it, we don’t rely on batteries, interfaces or cables to look, listen and remember.

A look at the tallest buildings in the world – Part 2

It was not long ago when a list of the tallest buildings in the world was led by American structures. As a matter of fact, in 1989, the United States had the top five spots on that particular list. Currently, America only has one building in those spots. It has been a remarkable trend that foreign nations have coveted taller buildings to add prestige to the city it resides in and its country. This inclination is not likely to fade any time soon.
The tallest completed building in the world is the Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan. At a remarkable one thousand six hundred and seventy and one-half feet tall, it gets this recognition on account of an antenna atop of its roof. Designed by C. Y. Lee & Partners, it was completed in 2004. It has one hundred and one floors. In 2006, Newsweek magazine named it one of the seven new wonders of the world.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia has the second and third tallest buildings on the globe. The two buildings are called Petronas Tower 1 and Petronas Tower 2 or simply the Petronas Twin Towers. Both of them are measured at one thousand four hundred and eighty three feet tall a piece. Similarly, eighty eight floors occupy the two buildings as well. It was completed in 1998 and the designer was Cesar Pelli.
We finally get to an American building at number three. The Sears Tower has long been a staple when thinking about the tallest buildings in the world. The chief architect was Bruce Graham and it was completed in 1974. Comprising one hundred and ten floors, the Sears Tower proudly stands at a height of one thousand four hundred and fifty feet tall.
The Jin Mao Building is currently number four. Since 1999, the Jin Mao has been the tallest edifice in Shanghai, China. With its eighty eight floors and one thousand three hundred and eighty one feet in height, this structure was actually designed by an American firm named Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill.
Number five is the Two International Finance Centre in Hong Kong. Designer Cesar Pelli makes his second appearance on this prominent list. As with his tallest building, the Petronas Twin Towers, this one in Hong Kong also consists of eighty eight floors. However, it is much shorter at a height of one thousand three hundred and sixty two feet tall.
If you were looking for the grand daddy of all tall buildings, then the famous Empire State Building in New York City enters the list at number nine. It was completed in 1931. With its one thousand two hundred and fifty feet in height and one hundred and two floors, the Empire State Building is synonymous with New York City. The designing firm of Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon had started a phenomenon that lingers on today. Tall buildings are majestic structures that people marvel in amazement. With this lure, the list of the tallest buildings in the world will continue to change.
Building Pillars

How long did the construction of the Burj Dubai, which is currently the tallest man-made structure, take to finish? How much man-power force was employed in building the 452-meter tall Petronas’s Twin Towers? You might be wondering how these skyscrapers are constructed, right? You can never imagine how human talent and ability gear towards inexplicable developments in engineering and architecture. And, as long as there is flamboyance in generating new ideas and style in construction feasibilities, it could be a building block to a more sophisticated world.
Construction is a process that “consists of building or assembling of infrastructure.†Houses, apartments, factories, offices, schools, roads, and bridges are only some of the wonderful creations of the construction industry. The nature of the industry’s activities includes the building of new structures, including site preparation, as well as additions and modifications to existing ones. Other process also includes maintenance, repair, and improvements on these structures.
If you think that construction is a complicated process, then, construction activity is more complex than what you imagine! It is not a flimsy design, renovate, and construct process because this activity requires in-depth research and planning. There should be hodgepodge of dexterity and intelligence when it comes to planning and continuing a large scale of construction projects. The industry also entails multi-tasking. Personnel who worked with the construction project are essential like the project manager, construction manager, design engineer, construction engineer or project architect. These people collaborate and work together to maximize your construction needs.
Setting up trade and commerce at the heart of Los Angeles, CA is a marvelous venture you have ever aspired. Construction companies have gained supremacy in building LA’s landmarks such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Griffith Observatory, Getty Center, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Hollywood Sign, etc. Renowned construction company in California should strengthen up their competitiveness to remain their plunk in the industry in building pillars to international fame and global status.
Many businesses in California decide to expand their buildings and facilities wherein construction projects are the best option. But, worry no more because there are hundreds of general contractor in Los Angeles you can count on! Take note, owners should evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of construction before pursuing to their plans. Even simple room addition in California, and house remodeling in Los Angeles are expensive to sustain and finance. Beautifying your business’ offices, halls, bathrooms, and pantries will absolutely costs you a million bucks.
To save, time, and money, knowing the type of construction project is a must. Three types of construction include: building construction, heavy/highway construction, and industrial construction. After knowing the construction type you need, make sure that proper planning and research should be utilized to fulfill the goals of the project.
If you are planning to set up new buildings or facilities, be it residential or commercial, you should start it with finding the right contractors. You should examine the contractors you are going to appoint and before signing the contract because these people will take full responsibility of the whole construction process. The contractors that you should hire are those referred by architects and engineers. In addition, other qualifications that should be met in finding the right contractors are: the previous experience they had to perform well in your construction needs, percentage of jobs they can finish on the desired schedule, and the quality of work they can guarantee. Getting a 100% assurance, means you’re on the right track!
Finding the right contractor, doesn’t end there. Supervising the project and close monitoring is a must to secure proper execution of the building. You should be adept or let’s just say aware of the processes to maintain the building’s structural integrity.
Adventure Vacations Fo Both Kids And Parents

When you bring up the subject of vacation with your kids, there is usually one of two responses; either they want to go to Disneyland for the third time or they want to take an exotic trip that Indiana Jones would consider an adventure. You don’t want to take that repeat vacation; you want something different but also a vacation that is not stressful. As parents you have the task of figuring out what is best for the family while at the same time satisfying everyone’s dream vacation. Since children don’t have the experience or insight that you have, many times they don’t know what they will like. Trekking through the jungles of Thailand sounds fun and exciting to your child but you know that the first night of sleeping in a jungle will be the last.
Cartoons with cute, talking animals such as Lion King spark interest in your children for an African safari. Some parts of Africa should be avoided but many areas are family friendly and can provide an adventure without needing machetes or trekking through miles of dense jungle. You can even sleep comfortably under the stars if you are willing to spend more money for fully catered meals and tents that are far from basic.
Even though Africa is a big safari draw, you should also consider Central America for a nature adventure. Costa Rica and Belize provide an amazing Array of flora and fauna and the airfare is significantly less than a trip to Africa. The added benefit of Costa Rica and Belize can be a rest from the jungle at the many pristine beaches.
Asia is becoming a top choice for families seeking a holiday that is both interesting and affordable. Beijing, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are not only interesting and family friendly cities but they are inexpensive compared to western cities. The Great Wall and the temples of Thailand are impressive and so much more interesting in person. Sites in these big cities allow your family to enjoy the culture but also retire to your comfortable hotel room so your exploration is not too stressful.
European cities offer the best combination of family-friendly and culture however there is a higher price tag. Museums and tourist attractions in Europe offer family discounts and sipping an espresso after climbing the Eiffel Tour has a big draw for parents while keeping the children amused.
Since international travel requires passports and generally long flights, you may want to consider destinations that are closer to home. Hawaii, for example, offers sun, beach and hiking so while you’re sipping your Mai Tai the kids can swim at the pool. As an added attraction there is no language barrier and flight discounts are often available to make your vacation more affordable.
It’s often a compromise to find the vacation that suits your entire family but a holiday with children doesn’t have to be the tried-and-true theme park. With some research and planning, exotic destinations that cater to families can be found to delight both you and your children.
Horses in Malaysia?

Yes plenty, from racing to dressage to jumpers and endurance there is polo even handicap riding programs! The country is lush even in the city center. The riding facilities are primarily in a club setting. Labor is inexpensive in Malaysia thus boarding (relative to our standards is inexpensive, 1350.00 Ringgit or roughly $ 125.US your horse will be groomed, mucked and provided with basic feed.Â
The barns we visited at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort were designed for the heat and humidity of south Asia. High ceilings lots of room for circulation, the days are hot but the stalls seem very comfortable. The stalls were kept very clean, manure is picked up and bagged for removal. The grooms worked their shed row much like our race tracks. Â
There are horses of many breeds in Malaysia and a variety of riding style there. Plenty of European trainers come to teach young and more mature riders. The Asian Classics (show jumping for qualified Asian riders) were held in conjunction with the FEI World Cup Show Jumping At Bukit Jahil Stadium about a half hours drive from the capital, Kuala Lumpur[1] According to the US show jumping team the footing, lighting and accommodations were all be exceptional. The horses there were housed in large box stalls and the barn, warm up arena and stadium are all air conditioned. Now, back home the thought of air conditioning a stable is a bit unordinary except in some of the very arid parts of the US, but here for this competition it is keeping the horses in a very controlled environment through out the competition.Â
On the east coast of the country, along the South China Sea, the Equestrian World Endurance Championships will be held in 2008. Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu [2] along with five other Malaysian riders will compete at the World Endurance Championship in Germany this August to promote the event in Malaysia.   The Terengganu Pony Club and a state owned Equestrian Club have been erected to rekindle interest in riding in that state.  Â
The native pony in Terengganu is the Kuda Padi. On the Northeastern shores young Malaysians ride their ponies bareback and barefoot as fast as they can along the beaches and at local events. There is an annual Kelantan Equestrian Festival (Pesta Sukan Berkuda Kelantan). The Kelantan bareback riders dress their ponies and themselves in lavish textiles, splashed with wonderful colors and sequences. Truly a sight!
South East Asia is not the first place one would think to look for horses but they have them and it seems a past time many natives enjoy.
[1] Eastern Malaysia in the state of Sleangor
[1] Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy; there is a Sultan for each of the 9 states. Terengganu is a state in Malaysia; these sultans rotate as the supreme king of all of Malaysia for 5 years. The Malaysian legal system is based on English Common law with executive powers vested in a cabinet led by a prime minister.

I visited Borneo and Kuala Lumpur last year and being a massive fan of animals, myself and my boyfriend visited all the animal related attractions. One of these was the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. If you are travelling to Kuala Lumpur then this is one attraction you shouldn’t miss!
Where Is It?
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is situated in the Lake Gardens area of Kuala Lumpur which is close to the Orchid Gardens and the Tun Abdul Razek Memorial. The bird park is a little bit out of the main town in Kuala Lumpur as we did try to follow a map and find our way there on foot but after getting lost and asking a couple of locals which way we needed to go, they told us we would be better getting a taxi. So get a taxi we did and good job too because it was about a 15-20 minute journey to the Bird Park. The Lake Gardens area where the Bird Park is situated also have many other attractions such as The Deer Park, Orchid & Hibiscus Garden, Butterfly Park and some beautiful landscaped gardens so you can combine all the attractions and only pay the one taxi fare and make a day of it.
Opening Hours
The Bird Park is open all year except for any religious holidays. Opening hours are 9am 6.30pm every day including Sundays and Public holidays.
Admission Prices
Tourists pay higher admission fees than the locals do. Locals pay 12 ringets for an adult and 6 ringets for a child. Tourists will pay 22 ringets for an adult and 15 ringets for a child which is 3.30 for an adult and 2.60 for a child in English money. As you can see the prices were more than reasonable.
About The Bird Park
The KL Bird Park was opened in 1991 by the Queen of Malaysia, Tunku Bainun.
The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park is the largest walk in aviary in the world. The bird park is set across 8 acres of land and is certainly very picturesque. Over 9000 species of birds currently live in the bird park and you can see them in natural surroundings as they are all free to fly where they want due to the fact that the bird park is built in the style of a massive aviary so basically the whole area of the bird park is covered by netting. Of the 5000 birds, around 90% are native birds and 10% are imported from other countries around the world.
While the birds are allowed to fly freely, the incompatible species are confined in smaller Avery and specially designed open areas within the park so they all still have adequate space.
The Bird Park is divided into five zones to prevent different species (that do not

This year’s Formula 1 Grand Prix season has started off with unexpected results.
The second racing event in the circuit was enjoyed in Kuala Lumpur as Malaysia hosted the 2007 Grand Prix at its Sepang International Circuit course during the first weekend in April, with the jewel in the crown, the Grand Prix de Monaco still to come.
Included in the Grand Prix Formula One Racing Championship in 1999, the Malaysia circuit, hosted at the Sepang racecourse near Kuala Lumpur, is fast becoming one of the most popular events in that part of Asia. Since their first year in the F1 racing circuit, the Malaysian course has offered drastic changes in weather to challenge F1 drivers, as well as a 56-lap, 5.54 km racecourse filled with hair-raising turns and straight-aways that beg for speed.
The Sepang racecourse, built in 1998, has become the guiding design of subsequent F1 racetracks around the world, and has led the way to offering a major global event that attracts thousands of visitors every year to this exotic country filled with charm, grace and history. Sepang is known to be one of the most technical circuits in the Grand Prix circuit, and its combinations of tight turns and straight-aways make it one of the most exciting courses for both drivers and spectators.
The racetrack, a mere 3.5 kilometers from the New Kuala Lumpur International Airport, is easily accessible by taxi and can be reached within a ten minute drive. Shuttle services also transport passengers back and forth as well, but most visitors opt to stay at least a few days to enjoy the atmosphere and amenities that Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia have to offer.
This year’s race saw Fernando Alonso crossing the finish line first for the McLaren-Mercedes racing team, and hot new rookie Lewis Hamilton, whose debut in the Australian Grand Prix in March 2007 saw him taking third, followed Alonso across the line to finish second in an exciting, heart-stopping race that had crowds at Sepang on their feet.
The roar of engines and the smell of hot rubber and warm asphalt drifted over the thousands who came to witness the exciting race, which saw Alonso maintaining an almost nine second lead over Hamilton the later half of the race as onlookers watched with wide-eyed excitement and cheered for the efforts of other racers, including Kimi Raikkonen, who finished third for Ferrari.
After Australia, the F1 site at Kuala Lumpur offered racing fans not only a drastic change in temperature, but sights as well. Malaysia, offering a quaint combination of modern amenities and architecture with simple Asian charm, provided domestic and global visitors with a different view of the world as seen by Malaysians. The capital city of Kuala Lumpur welcomed global visitors to the event with open arms and tasty treats that delights the palate.
Keep an eye on the McLaren-Mercedes racing team comprising of Alonso and the rookie fast making a name for himself in the F1 world, Lewis Hamilton, in upcomin Grand Prix as both give fellow racers a fast, exciting run for their money.
A look at the tallest buildings in the world – Part 3

There is nothing like a view from the topmost floor of a building; the taller the building the better. High rise buildings had started off as structures tall enough with floors to be counted off the fingers of your hand. But today it would be wiser to take the help of a photo than to count them while you pass by in a car. Checking out the elevator would be an even better idea.
However determining the tallest buildings is not as easy as counting the number of floors. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) in Chicago has listed methods and criteria to measure heights of buildings. The height of spires, statues and any other architecturally integral elements are taken into account. This does not include antennas and flagpoles. The height is measured from the pavement level of the main entrance.
Now let us have a look at some of the world’s tallest buildings.
At #5 is Sears Tower in Chicago, USA with a height of 442 meters and 108 floors. Until 1998, Sears Tower was uncontested in terms of height; it was the tallest building in the world. It has been the tallest building in the United States, surpassing the World Trade Center in 1973.
At #4 are the Petronas twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with a height of 452 meters and 88 floors. The ranking of Petronas above Sears was controversial. Petronas has a lower roof and lower overall height, but Sears has an antenna on top of it and Petronas has a spire. In the end, the heights were decided based on the existing rules for height calculation.
At #3 is the Shanghai World Financial Center in Shanghai, China which stands at 492 meters and has 101 floors. It is still under construction and will be open in mid-2008.
At #2 is the Taipei Tower in Taipei, Taiwan with a height of 509 meters and 101 floors. It is the world’s tallest completed skyscraper and has been hailed as one of the seven new wonders of the world. A combination of tradition and modernity, at the same time Asian and international, it is an icon for Taiwan.
At #1, is the Burj Dubai in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is still under construction and is expected to be completed in 2009 with a height of 818 meters and 200 floors. As of May 12,2008 it has already reached a height of 636 meters with 160 completed floors. Once completed, it would be the tallest man made structure of any kind, surpassing even the numerous radio and television broadcasting towers.
That would be one hard record to beat!

Malaysia is one of the most pleasant, hassle-free countries to visit in Southeast Asia. Malaysia is divided into two major regions: Peninsular Malaysia, which lies just south of Thailand, and East Malaysia, which can be found north of Indonesia on the island of Borneo. The Southeast Asian nation experienced a financial boom and underwent quick development during the late 20th century. The travel packages wrap Malaysia’s famous and well-liked destination that includes cities, resorts, beaches, island and beautiful as well as themed packages such as diving, adventures, fishing, mountain climbing and cultural tours. While trying to attract the flow of tourism,’ citing cases of new eco- resorts such as Datai Bay Resort in Langkawi and the Karumbunai Resort in Sabah. Malaysia’s tourism sector expects to benefit from this boom Sabbaruddin puts the situation in proper perspective, saying that there is, generally, lack of information in Europe about the Southeast Asian region. He says one of the most attractive features about Malaysia for tourists are prices have declined further for foreign tourists. `Malaysia is the only country in the region where prices are quoted in the local currency and not in US dollars.
This makes Malaysia a low-priced destination for foreign tourists whose currencies have appreciated considerably against the ringgit. Sabah is basically an agricultural state. He says Sabah’s unique location right in the heart of Southeast Asia makes it an attractive designation for foreign visitors on a jaunt to any of the Southeast Asian countries. `Sabah has two major attractions. We have first of all Mount Kinabalu and second, the Danum Valley which is a huge rain forest reserve bigger than Singapore.’ The Sabah government is promoting three aspects of tourism – the western coast with a cluster of hotels, resorts and other tourism facilities, the eastern coast noted for eco-tourism, and the interior of the state with Mount Kinabalu as a major attraction. While financial constraints will prove to be a major stumbling block, foreign tourism promoters will have to resort to imaginative ways of attracting tourism. Singaporeans, for instance, have embarked quietly on what is described as `dental tourism’ – tourists from developed countries, unwilling to pay the high costs of dental treatment and prosthesis fixtures at home, are being lured to Singapore where they are also offered dental treatment services plus a holiday in a good hotel as part of an attractive airfare- cum-hotel package.
