Unique Malaysia

Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia’s most friendly and accessible tourist destinations. Most Malaysians speak English well and there are miles of pristine, deserted east coast beaches, delightful colonial cities such as Melaka and Georgetown, cool hill resorts such as the Genting Highlands, and exquisite islands such as Langkawi and Penang. There’s also East Malaysia comprising the lands of Sabah, Sarawak and parts of Borneo. The former preserves of head-hunters, these areas offer fascinating glimpses into the past. Here’s a look at three of Malaysia’s unique and wonderful places Melaka, Sarawak and the vibrant capital Kuala Lumpur
Melaka (formerly Melacca) is a city on the west coast of Malaysia drenched in history. With its ancient monuments, picturesque streets, and Chinese shrines and temples, it’s a wonderful place just to browse and identify the calling cards of the Portuguese, Dutch and British.
For shopping head to famed Jonker Street with its antique and handicraft shops and street cafes and then watch cultural performances at the Portuguese Square. There’s also a zoo with a fine collection of tigers.
While most tourists to Malaysia stick to the peninsular, a trip to East Malaysia can be very rewarding. The region made up of the provinces of Sabah and Sarawak in North Borneo offers an unparalleled experience for nature lovers. The capital of Sarawak is Kuching, a modern city with a delightful waterfront, landscaped esplanade and in the background stands the great mountain of Gunung Matang.
For a quick introduction to Sarawak, visit the Sarawak Cultural Village, a living museum of the culture, arts and crafts of the region’s ethnic groups. The 7-hectare site of the Cultural Village is just a 5-minute walk from the beach and houses models of traditional longhouses, roundhouses and huts, all built around a lake.
Each of the replica houses is inhabited by members of the relevant ethnic group, attired in traditional costume. They follow a traditional lifestyle keeping alive the traditions, arts and crafts of their tribe. A storyteller explains these traditions to visitors who are invited to join in the activities such as doing an Iban war dance, shooting darts from a blowpipe, drinking the local tipple called tuak, and listening to Orang Ulu legends or a performance on the sape.
No visit to Malaysia would be complete without a visit to the capital Kuala Lumpur. Known as the Garden City of Lights, KL has much to offer the traveller ranging from heritage buildings and monuments, gardens and parks, and scintillating shopping in Chinatown, Little India, and local Malay bazaars, as well as hyper-modern shopping malls.
But the pinnacle of a visit to KL is a sortie up to the Sky Bridge on the 41st floor of the Petronas Twin Towers. It’s no longer the world’s tallest building but it’s still up there with the best of them. The climactic scenes of the movie Entrapment took place here, 175 metres above sea-level.
Malaysia is a welcoming, safe and orderly country. With its myriad attractions, it’s a place for everyone.

Malaysia is a country that is not only diverse in culture, it also offers a diversity of holiday genre. I first visited Malaysia as a child and have since been a frequent visitor to the country for work and holidays.
Malaysia is a country consisting of 13 states and 3 federal territories. The country is separated into two regions, West Malaysia which is the main Malaysia Pennisula and East Malaysia which is connected to Brunei and Indonesia. Malaysia is governed by an elected government and the head of state is represented by a Yang di Pertuan Agong or the King of Malaysia. The head of state is elected to a five year term from amongst the nine kings (Sultan) of the Malay states.
Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia and it is also home to another twin tower called the Petronas Twin Tower. Most of us will remember the twin tower as a location shoot for the film “Entrapment”, where Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones manoeuvre dangerously across the bridge. Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant and modern city which offers exciting night life and fantastic foods.
Malaysia has lots to offer as a holiday destination. There are places that will satisfy different travel delights. They are:
Beach
The east and west coast of Malaysia is lined with miles of white soft sand. The clear and blue water is also a great spot for snorkeling and surfing. The islands near the mainland are perfect destinations for a relaxing holiday. The sea also offers an excellent dive for diving enthusiast as the coral reefs are unspoilt and beautiful. You can also observe at a distance turtles coming ashore to lay eggs on the beach at the east coast of Malaysia.
National Parks
For the nature lovers and people who want to rough it out, there are many National Parks that will offer such experience. Activities in these Parks ranges from walking through tropical jungle, staying in canopy tree house, visiting fruit tree plantations and mountain climbing. One popular climb is Mt Kinabalu located in Kinabalu National Park in the East Malaysia state of Sabah. It is also known to be the most accessible mountain in the world as not specialized mountain climbing skills is needed though a reasonably good fitness level is required.
Fish farm (Kelong)
Kelong are wooden fish farm built on stilts in the middle of the sea. This Kelong are built by fisherman primarily for fishing purposes. Some of these Kelong now offer fishing holiday. Kelong holiday usually offer all inclusive stay and fishing expedition. Kelong stays are more popular with the locals but it will be an interesting holiday choice for people who want to rough it out as the facilities in these farms are very basic.
The climate in Malaysia is tropical hence the temperature is warm and humid throughout the year. However, it is still possible to escape into cool surrounding (not air condition). The hills in Malaysia such as Cameron Highland, Fraser Hill and Genting Highland provide an escape from the warm and humid climate. There are many established hotels in these hills, some of which still retains strong colonial influence such as Tudor framed house and afternoon English tea.
It is easy to get around in Malaysia. The main motorway links from Singapore to Thailand. Visitors in Malaysia can either hire a car or travel interstate by coach or by air. The interstate coach is a comfortable and inexpensive way of travelling and it also provide an almost similar service of an airline, that is, food, drink and a film is included in the fare.
Shopping in Kuala Lumpur
A holiday to Malaysia is not complete with out an enterprising shopping expedition. What better place to do so than in Kuala Lumpur the nation’s best known shopping destination. Kuala Lumpur is the commercial capital of Malaysia and has 66 large scale shopping malls with in its precincts. Also being the fashion and style hub of the country Kuala Lumpur and its shopping outlets are the epitome of high fashion and the very definition of chic.
Shopping in Kuala Lumpur also offers variety the air conditioned shopping malls that deal in luxury high end goods, department stores, hypermarkets, shopping arcades that are complete with Cineplex complexes and bowling alleys, specialty shops and designer fashion boutiques make up the high end, modern shopping attractions of the city. While traditional bazaars, night markets and open air flea markets offer a more traditional shopping experience.
Favourite items on the shopping lists of tourists are pewter, batik, duty-free items, electrical products, pret-a-porter attire, sportswear and handicrafts. An interesting and novel experience for visitors from western countries is the night markets or ‘pasar malam’ in Malay where the traders begin peddling their wares in the late afternoon. These open-air markets feature hawker stalls that sell a variety of local produce, foodstuff, clothing and cakes; Haggling for a good bargain is a common sight here. Street artists, musicians, soothsayers and traditional medicine vendors are also an entertaining sight in these markets.
The annual Kuala Lumpur shopping carnival that is held from October to November draws in lots of visitors a sizable proportion of which are tourists, this a good time to buy goods at discounted prices. The city Kuala Lumpur has designated shopping districts areas like Bukit Bintag offer mid range shopping with some good bargains on offer for electronics and fashion items. Other areas like Petaling Street which is known as the city’s Chinatown has an ethnically infused flavor and has Chinese knick knacks, traditional medicine and pirated DVD’s. Up market areas like KLCC and the Suria mall in the Petronas towers are pricy and deal with luxury brands and designer labels.
A Kuala Lumpur hotel that offers good access to some of the best shopping districts of the city is the Citrus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. A number of luxury hotels in the city are located in what is known as the hotel belt in the Bukit Bintang area, this is the best place to stay if shopping is your first priority on your holiday.

Asian Holiday Money Guide

Holiday in Asia, probably your flights are booked, guide books bought, and even the packing has started, you are almost ready for that well deserved few weeks, or even months holiday in Asia.
Staying at a one of those gorgeous Bali villas, or a beach side hut in Koh Samui, or even diving in Cebu?
What is probably outstanding is your Travel Money Strategy. No, I don’t mean how much money you expect to spend in Singapore versus Bangkok, but how are you going to have access to the right amount of money, in the right currency, at the right time and place. Of course, without having to carry it all on your person!
Here are some insider tips to money matters for those who will travel in Asia, beyond the metropolises like Singapore and Hong Kong.
Travelers Cheques
Whilst these are the regular staple for travels to Europe, in Asia, they are somewhat less convenient. As a rule of thumb, they are not as widely accepted in Asia (outside of larger cities), as they would be elsewhere in the world.
If you are taking any travelers cheques with you, plan to change these at bigger cities like Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
Of course, the rate you will get for changing travelers cheques will be less than hard cash.
Also, once you are off the beaten track, expect people to look at you as if your are offering them Monopoly Money, when you put your travelers cheques forward.
ATMs/Cash Machines
These are increasingly available across Asia, and now a days have penetrated well beyond the big cities, into second/third tier cities, as well as most of the main Asian holiday resort destinations, such as the Bali Island, Phuket, and Langkawi.
Whilst in bigger cities, you will spot ATMs with ease, at many other destinations you will have to actually go looking for them. In Bali, for example, many cash machines are located at Circle K outlets (convenience store chain), or petrol/gas stations. In other more remote places, you will need to try your luck at the local mini-market and even the chemists!
However, ATMs are by far one of the most convenient ways of accessing cash easily in Asia, without having to carry huge amounts in person.
However, again, similar to travelers cheques, you will have to pay for the convenience/service in an incremental way. Banks and credit card companies will make money from you in two ways.
Firstly, because you are withdrawing at a foreign currency, there are exchange rates involved. For ATM withdrawals you will almost certainly end up getting a poorer exchange rate than if you were changing cash.
The second area of payment, is in the form of foreign currency withdrawal charge that will be imposed on your transaction. Given that this charge is often a flat fee, you are better off making fewer withdrawals of bigger amounts of money, than many withdrawals, each of which resulting in a separate charge.
Money Belts
There is no two ways about it, keeping your cash and valuables in a money belt is a safer way than carrying a big wallet, or a handbag which may be snatched with ease.
However, keep in mind that, unless you are traveling to Beijing or Seoul in the winter, your Asian travels will inevitably take you to hot tropical destinations.
As those who have had to carry money belts in the tropics will attest, they can very quickly become very uncomfortable (and wet!). Also, when at more humid environments, a money belt easily becomes very visible when perspiration sticks your clothing onto your body, or you remove your top for a swim. All of a sudden, what once was a discrete security measure becomes a bill-board advertising that you are carrying valuables on you, in the process pinpointing the location too!
So, as they say, horses-for-courses. You will need to decide on the best method of carrying your valuables depending on the environment. Or even better, if you feel like you are in a high risk situation, it is probably best to leave most of your valuables under the protection of a reputable hotel safety box.
Money Exchange
As a general rule of thumb, you will get a better exchange rate for your money at your Asian destination, than back home, regardless of where you change your money. Of course with the exception of larger international hotels, where the exchange rates on offer match the nightly room rates! So, it is well worth doing your homework before your leave home, and check the prevailing exchange rates for your currency, at some of the bigger banks’ internet sites for your destination(s).
Once you are in Asia, the best and safest way of changing money is to visit one of the local banks. It is worth noting that, in Asia banking office hours will vary substantially from country to country. For example, in Bali, most banks will open at around 9 am, where as in Singapore, some bank branches will not open their doors till 11 am. If your need is time sensitive, it will pay to plan ahead the day before. The good news is, most banks in Asia will accept many different currencies, and often offer fair rates, and provide official receipts. (Of course, some currencies such as the US Dollar, the Euro, and the Japanese Yen, are more readily accepted by more banks than currencies from some other countries.)
If however, you wanted to squeeze a little more from your money, or you have no other choice, you may be tempted to use an Exchange Services/Kiosks, found throughout Asia. Typically, these should offer slightly better rates than banks.
If you are going to use this option, here are a few tips and tricks.
You will probably get a fair rate, and be treated fairly in cities like Singapore, where local laws and enforcement will help protect you.
However, in some other cities/resorts you do need to take care, and be on the guard.
In many countries, most of these exchange kiosks are no more authorised than the handwritten (or nowadays printed) authorization sign they carry!
Some are blatantly unscrupulous, and will successfully short change even the most worldly-wise of travelers.
If you decide to use an exchange kiosk, here are some best practice tips:
Never change money on your own – don’t be alarmed, in most places there is usually no risk involved to the individual, but you are better off with 2-3 pairs of eyes than just your own
Change small amounts at a time – reduces your exposure and their greed!
Agree on the rate, and the amount you are going to change before taking out your money – unless of course you want to see your real $100 bill change into a recently printed fake in front of your very eyes!
Count the money given to you, and then when you are finished – hand it over to your partner to count again. (You should never count at the same time together, as you need that 2nd pair of eyes to observe the transaction
If at any point you are in doubt – just smile and walk-away
In a Nut Shell
1 – Make a Travel Money Strategy before you leave home
2 – Ensure that you have sufficient funds/credit on your cards
3 – Do take some travelers cheques with you, just in case
4 – Take some cash with you, even if a small amount
5 – Decide where and how you want to use you money belt
6 – Do use reputable hotel safes
7 – When exchanging money, try to stick to official banks
8 – If changing money elsewhere, try to make sure there is more than just you overseeing the transaction
9 – Make sure you never loose sight of your money at exchange kiosks
10 – If you feel uncomfortable during a transaction, just smile and walk away
As they say, prevention is better than the cure. If you decide to use these tips, please also observe your environment, and apply common sense. Just don’t forget, in many of the Asian destinations you will be traveling to, what you pay for a hamburger or a Skinny-Late is probably almost equal to someone’s local wage. Always carry the minimum amount of money with you, and apply caution when at remote parts of the developing world.
Having said all this. Asia has been my second home for more than 20 years now, and I have taken many holidays in Asia. May be I have been lucky, but in these 20 years I have had the most wonderful time of my life, and never really been cheated changing money. Well, almost never, there was that time when I was a backpacker when…
Enjoy your Asian holiday.
Many happy returns…
Best Asian destinations for the US dollar
September 22, 2009 by admin

To select just a few destinations in Asia is not easy. Many very different countries with a multitude of customs, traditions and several different religions makes for very interesting and enjoyable travel experiences at good prices.
I have visited many Asian countries and found something special and many really worthwhile experiences in them all. Value for your dollar, or Euro etc, varies, but in general, costs are lower than in the USA or Europe. Of course, it depends on what “value” means to you. A very low price for sub standard service or dirty and very basic living conditions is not what I look for.
Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur are worthwhile stop-over points with lots worth seeing at reasonable costs in all of them. It is not always advisable to look for the cheaper hotels since some of the top class hotels offer real luxury at very attractive prices. Kuala Lumpur is my favourite and also where I think the best value for your hard earned cash can be found. I have stayed a few times in the new Hilton, where two people can have an Executive room for about 145 dollars per night. This includes really luxurious and spacious accommodation, with buffet breakfast, daytime non-alcoholic refreshments, evening hot and cold buffet with small but very tasty examples of Asian food, deserts, fruits, cheeses and chocolates, accompanied with unlimited wines, beers and spirits of your choice. Using a cheaper hotel with inferior facilities and not including food and drink could prove over all more expensive. Although many restaurants offer good low priced food, alcohol can increase the bill considerably. The city is expanding and being improved rapidly but in a well planned and attractive way. Shopping possibilities and value could soon be the best in the world. It has, in my opinion, already left Singapore far behind.
There are bargains to be found in other areas of Malaysia and overall many very good fairly priced hotels. The “tax free” island of Langkawi is particularly good value for money.
Vietnam is a land where much can be seen and enjoyed for a very low outlay. Flights from Kuala Lumpar to Hanoi or Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) can be quite cheap and internal travel costs are very low. A 120 mile trip by train from Phan Thiet to Saigon cost me under 6 dollars in the “soft seat” class. Like everywhere else in Asia, get a few quotes before deciding on what to do. A private day tour to the Mekong Delta was first quoted at 85 dollars per person but
Commonwealth Game 2010 An Event That Would Make History
Commonwealth is an organization of independent sovereign states with different faiths, cultures, races, languages and traditions in the world. The Commonwealth Games is a sports event which is held once every four years. It is managed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). The Commonwealth India 2010 or Commonwealth Game 2010 will be held in New Delhi.
About 14 million people will be hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010. India will host Commonwealth Game for the first time. And Asia will host this event for the second time after the Commonwealth Game 1998 in Kuala Lumpur. Delhi became the host for the Commonwealth 2010 Games by defeating the Canadian city of Hamilton by 46 votes. This voting was done at CGF General Assembly in Montego Bay in November 2003.
Delhi, the capital city of India, is rich in history and culture. Located on the western end of the Gangetic Plain, this state is bordered by Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The old district of the state popularly known as Old Delhi was the capital of Muslim India during the 18th century. Many mosques and historic sites were built in this part of Delhi during the reign of the Muslim rulers. Later on, museums to commemorate their victories were built here. New Delhi was created by the British Raj. The majestic government buildings and tree lined avenues are worth visiting.
In order to attend the Commonwealth India 2010, you will have to be at Delhi from 3 – 14 October 2010 and witness the special event, right from the Opening to the Closing Ceremonies. October is a favorable time to visit Delhi as the temperature ranges from minimum 17.2 degrees centigrade to maximum 31.3 degrees centigrade. Humidity during this time of the year ranges from 31 to 78% for the October and November months.
The Commonwealth Game 2010 will be held in the Delhi Games Village, located at the city center. It will be constructed as a low rise medium development on a 40 acre site and can accommodate 8,500 athletes and officials. Both the existing and new stadium will serve as the venue for a range of sports like:
Archery
Aquatics
Athletics
Badminton
Boxing
Cycling
Gymnastics
Hockey
Lawn Bowls
Netball
Rugby 7s
Shooting
Squash
Table Tennis
Tennis
Weightlifting
Wrestling
Apart from this, there will be 15 special events for the elite disabled athletes which will be contested across 4 Para-Sports like Athletics, Swimming, Power lifting and Table Tennis.
